Smiley Flower Garden Embroidery Hoop

Bryn O’Reilly

We’re obsessed with this whimsical floral embroidery hoop our community member, Anaya (@yanadesigns) created! Recreate this project to add a touch of charm to any room, whether hung on a wall or propped up on a table. With just a few supplies and some creativity, you can make a beautiful piece of art that’s perfect for decorating your home or giving as a thoughtful gift. Let’s get started!

Supplies you need:

  • 5” Embroidery Hoop
  • Aida Cross Stitch Fabric
  • Embroidery Threads & Needle
  • Scissors
  • Tacky Glue
  • Glue Gun & Sticks
  • Flush Wire Cutters
  • Tweezers or Jewel Pick
  • Disappearing Ink Pen (Optional)

Step 1: Prepare the Fabric

Start by placing the Aida cross stitch fabric in the embroidery hoop, ensuring it's taut and smooth. If you're creating a design with stems for flowers, use a disappearing ink pen to mark their placement on the fabric. Backstitch stems for each flower.

Step 2: Embellish with Buttons

Using flush wire cutters, remove the shanks from the Smiley Flowers buttons. Then, use a glue gun to adhere the buttons to the fabric according to your design. For additional embellishments, like the Flower Power buttons, use embroidery thread to attach them securely.

Step 3: Add Sparkle with Jewels

To add some sparkle to your design, use small tweezers or a jewel pick to place Jewelz onto dots of tacky glue. Allow the glue to dry completely to ensure the jewels stay in place.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Trim any excess fabric around the embroidery hoop, leaving just enough to tuck behind the frame. Working in small sections, apply hot glue along the inside of the back of the hoop. Carefully fold the fabric onto the glue, ensuring the hoop lays flat when dry.

And just like that, you’re all done! Feel free to customize your design with different colors, buttons, and embellishments to make it uniquely yours or better suited for a friend you’re gifting it to. Happy crafting!
